Margate commission reviews high-level draft of strategic plan, seeks clearer language on neighborhoods and safety

Margate city commissioners and staff on a workshop-style agenda reviewed an initial draft of a citywide strategic plan, discussing a proposed mission and vision, four strategic focus areas and draft performance measures while asking staff to return with specific action steps and implementation details.

Consultant Karen, who led the presentation of the draft, said the document is meant to be high level and to capture a shared direction so department directors can later develop action items and performance measures. "What we have today, as Kayla was saying, is really walking through the initial draft document of the strategic plan," Karen said as she introduced the plan's mission, vision, core values and four strategic focus areas.

Commissioners and the mayor pushed staff to refine wording and to add specificity in several areas. On the mission and vision, elected officials asked that residents and community experience be reflected more clearly; one commissioner urged adding language so the vision not only describes the built environment but also "where people experience community." Another suggested adding "family friendly" as an explicit part of the mission.

On values, commissioners debated tone and phrasing. One commissioner said a preference for the word "integrity" over the draft phrase "we are honest," and asked staff to reword the value to emphasize ethical behavior rather than an absolute assertion about past actions.
