Library proposes permanent StoryWalk pilot at Buena Vista Reservoir Park for summer

Librarian Jennifer Benson presented the library’s plan for a permanent StoryWalk pilot at Buena Vista Reservoir Park to the Carlsbad Library Board of Trustees on March 26, 2025. The project would convert the temporary summer story-walk installations the library has used into a permanent, year‑round exhibit along the park’s horseshoe‑shaped concrete path.

Benson explained that vendors manufacture angled aluminum frames (approximately 18-by-24 inches) mounted on aluminum posts with removable bottom rails so staff can slide out a backer graphic and swap story pages. A typical 32‑page picture book would require about 23 stations, including welcome and end stations. The estimated budget for 23 exhibit frames and Parks & Recreation installation at Buena Vista Reservoir Park is “just under $15,000.”

Staff plan to deconstruct picture books in‑house, laminate the double‑page spreads and place them behind an acrylic protective sheet; the pages are water‑resistant but not fully waterproof. Benson said a set change uses two purchased books (each book costing roughly $20–$30) — about $60 to change a full set — and staff anticipate rotating the story every two to three months. Parks & Recreation staff have walked the site with library staff and are working out station spacing. Benson said the pilot could be installed by June to coincide with the summer reading program and would include a community celebration. Marketing would be coordinated through library e-newsletters, social media and Parks & Rec channels.

Trustees asked about materials and language presentation. Benson said the permanent design does not permit placing a full English version in one direction and Spanish in the other; instead, staff will prioritize books that present English and Spanish on the same page when possible. Trustees expressed enthusiasm and asked follow‑up questions about production and scheduling. There were no public speakers on the item.
