Family members, friends and colleagues gathered on a cold, rainy day in Bowie as a portion of Route 450 beginning at Hilltop Plaza was dedicated in memory of former Maryland Senate majority leader Doug Peters.
"This honor is fitting," said Stephanie Peters, one of Peters's daughters, describing the dedication and the frequent times her father used the stretch of road for travel to football practices, school drop-offs and visits to constituent stores.
The dedication recognizes Peters's decades of public service. "Peters, a former veteran and a son of two public school teachers, served on the Bowie City Council, then the Prince George's County Council, and then in the Maryland State Legislature," an event speaker said during remarks at the unveiling.
Speakers at the ceremony described Peters as a mentor and advocate. "He was a real, you know, just like I said, mentor to me, real dear friend who really looked out for the people, Bowie, the people of Prince George's County, the the people of our state," a colleague said.
Attendees noted Peters died in December 2023 after a battle with multiple myeloma, two days short of his 60th birthday. Family members emphasized his priorities. "Just remember Doug so clearly saying over and over and over again, just make sure you focus on your family. It's the most important thing that you can do," another family member said.
As cars passed the newly unveiled sign, speakers reflected that Peters's name would remain on the road while his public service was remembered by residents of Bowie and Prince George's County.
