The Board of County Commissioners appointed a panel of commissioners and staff to serve as defense (fence) viewers to inspect a boundary dispute between neighboring landowners.
County staff described the routine statutory role of commissioners acting as fence viewers under Kansas law and said the process generally determines whether an existing fence is "adequate" and how construction costs should be apportioned. "It also must be a Kansas legal fence, which is at least three wire," staff said when outlining the standards for what counts as an adequate fence.
Commissioners volunteered to serve on the viewing party alongside county staff; the board motioned, seconded and approved appointing Commissioners Ron, Don and Patrick (county staff) as the viewing team. The inspection was scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, with a 10 a.m. start on site and an assembly at the courthouse at 9:30 a.m. County staff said they will notify landowners of the date and include a YouTube seminar and handout with procedural information for landowners.
The appointment is an administrative duty under Kansas state statute; the viewing team will inspect the boundary, determine a recommended fence type and cost apportionment, and report back to the board.
