City Manager Dr. Ana Alvarez told the Hayward City Council on March 20 that the Hayward Police Department successfully completed a four-year accreditation cycle with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
Alvarez said the assessment and final public hearing took place in Garden Grove, where CALEA commissioners voted unanimously to re-accredit the department. "Accreditation through CALEA is a voluntary process ... and offers recommendations for operational and organizational improvements," Alvarez said in her remarks, describing CALEA as "widely recognized as the gold standard in public safety."
Alvarez told the council that about 18,000 law enforcement agencies operate in the United States and roughly 5% are CALEA-accredited; she said 14 California agencies currently hold CALEA accreditation and this is the fifth CALEA accreditation and reaccreditation for the Hayward Police Department. Mayor Mark Salinas and Chief Brian Matthews participated in the commission review and the council offered congratulations to chief and command staff.
No formal council action was required; the announcement was included as part of the city manager’s report.
