Rising Sun officials: no final word yet on speed cameras; council considers speed bumps on West Cherry

Rising Sun Police Chief Peterson told the board on March 25 that there is “no real update on the speed cameras” but that the town must install public-notification signs for a school zone before the private vendor can complete permitting and electrical work.

“We have to install a few signs of a notifying the public of a school zone, and that is our part,” Chief Peterson said. He added that the vendor handling the camera equipment must finish its permitting with the electric utility and other agencies before cameras can be operational.

Commissioner Emily Kleiner said the town is monitoring dangerous speeds on residential streets and is considering installing speed bumps on West Cherry during the next budget cycle. “I’m seeing incredible speeds on residential roads that are very dangerous,” Kleiner said, and she said the board is weighing physical-calming measures for the coming budget year.

Chief Peterson and other staff also asked drivers to expect delays during upcoming community events, including the Rising Sun Middle School Tiger Trot and the Rising Sun Little League parade.

Why it matters: speed-enforcement technology and physical-traffic-calming measures are options the town can deploy to address speeding in residential areas and near schools; each approach has different lead times and installation requirements.
