Board adopts AP Spanish Literature and Culture textbook to align curriculum districtwide

The Tolleson Union High School District governing board voted to adopt a new textbook for AP Spanish Literature and Culture after a committee review of three vendors and a public display period.
District Multilingual and Multicultural staff presented the proposal, noting the adoption fills a gap: the district previously lacked an adopted AP Spanish Literature and Culture curriculum. The committee reviewed three vendors, placed materials on public display for the required 60 days at district and campus locations, solicited community feedback via an online form and QR code, and used a rubric aligned to AP course competencies and WestEd recommendations to evaluate materials.
Christina Massey, co-director of Multilingual and Multicultural Education, summarized the committee—s findings and recommendation. The committee found the selected resource aligned with AP exam tasks, provided scaffolded supports for emergent bilinguals and heritage speakers, integrated assessments and Canvas compatibility, and included teacher professional development. "This selection directly supports WestEd's recommendation to adopt high quality curricular materials that promote rigorous, engaging, and student-centered instruction," Massey said.
Presenters said about 19 responses were received through the public feedback form, most from students; staff reported limited parent response. Committee members said there are roughly 90 students currently enrolled in AP Spanish across the district, which constrained community response numbers but did not preclude committee evaluation. The presenters noted plans to expand recruitment for AP Spanish and emphasized dual-enrollment opportunities with partner institutions to provide college credit.
The committee identified "Assumeo, second edition" (as named in the committee presentation) as the recommended textbook; with board approval the district will purchase materials and begin professional development in spring 2026. The implementation plan calls for teacher training, ongoing coaching, formative assessment alignment to AP expectations, and monitoring of student performance.
The motion to adopt passed on a roll-call vote: Dr. Luna Najera, Del Palacio, Ortega Romero, Chapman and Sun recorded yes votes. Staff said the next steps are purchase of curricular materials and teacher professional development to support implementation in the coming school year.
The agenda packet included documentation of the adoption committee meetings, the rubric evaluations, the 60-day public display, and the public feedback summary.
