Senate committee moves graduate medical education bill forward with amendment; unanimous carry

Senate Bill 262, relating to graduate medical education, was considered in a committee work session and carried unanimously. Destiny Cooper, the committee policy analyst from the Legislative Counsel Bureau Research Division, summarized the bill and the work-session amendment for the record.
Cooper said SB 262 would transfer the advisory council on graduate medical education and administration of the graduate medical education grant program from the Office of Science, Innovation and Technology to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The bill expands the purposes for which Nevada institutions providing residency training may receive grants and makes an appropriation "of 4,500,000.0 for fiscal years 02/05 through 02/06 and 02/06 through 02/07," as summarized in the staff document presented to the committee. Cooper also said an amendment proposed by Senator Prezina clarifies subsection 2 of section 8 and adds two assembly members as cosponsors.
Chairman Donate asked for a motion. Vice Chair Taylor moved to amend and do pass; Senator Lang seconded. The committee voted in favor; the bill “carries unanimously,” and the chair assigned the floor statement to Senator Pzena.
Because the vote was taken in a work session, committee staff will prepare the floor statement and the bill will be placed on the Senate calendar for subsequent floor action.
