City administrator highlights library reopening, emergency-preparedness training and local retail activity

At the North Bend City Council meeting the city administrator reported several community and operational updates, including emergency-preparedness collaboration with the school district, a well-attended library reopening, public-safety recognitions and local retail developments.

The administrator said the fire department conducted emergency-preparedness training in collaboration with the school district; staff will distribute a preparedness information package to the district. The administrator also said ballot titles for an unspecified measure had been distributed and certified for online publication, though the ballot titles were not yet finalized.

The library’s reopening was described as well attended; the administrator noted "Louie was a big hit" at the event. The administrator also relayed that Officer Martin, a recently hired lateral officer, recovered a stolen purse and returned it to the owner. The administrator quoted the victim’s husband saying, "it helps the community have peace of mind knowing that caring and diligent officers are working on our behalf. We're grateful for your continued service." The administrator also reported that Sergeant Holt completed leadership development training with the Oregon Executive Development Institute.

On local economic activity, the administrator said Grocery Outlet is anticipated to open in June and that contract negotiations are underway for a Big Lots tenant; no contractual details were provided. The administrator additionally reported that the parks, street, police and fire departments are short staffed.

Councilors offered brief comments, with Councilor Jones and Mayor Abel Key thanking staff and congratulating library staff on the reopening.
