Commission approves April Joel Nicholl exhibit, opens Kaiserfest slot to other artists

The Keizer Arts Commission approved the April exhibit submission from artist Joel Nicholl and voted to open the previously reserved August–September Kaiserfest display to other artists.

During discussion, members reviewed submitted materials and confirmed the April show’s artists and pieces fit the gallery schedule. A motion to approve the April Joel Nicholl exhibit was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.

Separately, commissioners debated the timing of the city’s Kaiserfest (formerly IrisFest) and whether festival-related poster displays should be shown around the festival date. Commissioners agreed that because the chamber had shifted the festival timing this year, reserving August–September for the Kaiserfest posters might not align with public interest. The commission moved and seconded a motion to remove the Kaiserfest August–September reservation and open that display period to other artists; the motion passed on a voice vote.

Commissioners discussed next steps: staff agreed to contact Joel Nicholl about possible date swaps if needed, to coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce, and to ask the chamber no later than August whether the festival will be held in May in future years so the commission can better align displays with the event.

The commission also discussed logistics for presentation materials (color vs. black-and-white proofs) and the process for artist submissions via the arts commission page on the city website.
