CTE SkillsUSA students present 'From Rigs to Roots' community project before board and head to state competition

Members of the Hobbs CTE SkillsUSA chapter presented their "From Rigs to Roots" and "Ripple Effect" initiatives to the school board on March 25 and said the chapter will take 86 students to the state SkillsUSA competition the following day.
Students and their CTE director outlined three components of the American Spirit/community-service entry: planting more than 50 trees across the community with sponsor engagement and QR-coded metal stands produced by construction and welding students; creating care packages and events in partnership with the American Legion, United Way and Hobbs Public Library to support veterans and active-duty service members; and a multi-wave campaign (families, industry, policymakers) to promote career and technical education and SkillsUSA locally and at the Roundhouse.
Presenters said the mayor issued a proclamation naming March 3, 2025, SkillsUSA Leadership Day to recognize the program’s community work. The students explained that the tree project also placed 13 trees at elementary schools and five at CTEC and that sponsors were engaged through a "sponsor retreat" model. The board applauded the presentations and wished the students success at state competition.
The presentation was informational; no board action was taken. Students were given time for photos and were congratulated by board members and staff.
