Parents raise concerns about library move, fencing and field access; board cites maintenance and policy limits

Parents and community members raised several facilities concerns during public comment, including the relocation of the intermediate center library, requests for larger perimeter fencing and denied requests to use the Atlas Field for summer programs.

One parent asked whether the intermediate center library was being removed after hearing books had been boxed and moved; administrators responded that computer labs and classroom space were being reconfigured and said they would make efforts to ensure books remained available for students to take home.

A parent asked whether funds could be used to purchase larger fencing around the intermediate center blacktop and playground. The administration said that security funds have become available in some recent years and that the board could explore using those funds to improve fencing if the board chooses to prioritize it.

Steve Holmesa, representing Greater Pittston Legion volunteer users, asked about repeated denials to use Atlas Field and whether district policy 707 (facility use) had been revised. He was told the policy had been discussed but that no final revision appeared in place; administrators cited maintenance conflicts and scheduling as reasons the field was denied last year. Holmesa said he would request use again and offered to assist with field upkeep if access were granted.

Speakers asked the board to clarify facility‑use policy language and to provide clearer procedures for community groups seeking summer or volunteer use of district athletic fields. The board advised that field access decisions consider maintenance, scheduling conflicts and staff capacity to support outside uses.
