Historic Preservation Commission reports virtual tours, landmarking work and SHPO grant for plan update

The Meridian Historic Preservation Commission reported on a range of preservation efforts to City Council on March 25, including virtual tours, walking tours, the transfer and preservation of silos from the Eggers Farmstead, and an awarded grant to update the city’s historic preservation plan.
Commissioners said virtual tours and a self-guided walking tour bibliography are available on the city website and in printed booklets at City Hall. The commission is expanding guided walking tours and plans a monthly series on the third Saturday of the month. Social-media outreach and content highlighting local history continue to grow.
The commission described recent preservation work on the Meridian Speedway (which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places after a multi-year effort) and the Eggers Farmstead/Black Cat silos. Commission members said the silos — described in the presentation as the last remaining dual silos structure in the Treasure Valley — were carefully disassembled and transferred to Victory Gardens for future reassembly.
On planning, the commission reported it received a $12,000 Certified Local Government grant from the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to help update Meridian’s preservation plan; the commission is providing $5,000 in matching funds plus staff and volunteer time. The commission plans public outreach and a survey as part of the plan update, including a kickoff meeting and a public outreach meeting in April.
Commission members asked for council support as outreach and plan updates proceed. Council members thanked the commission for its work and highlighted the silo relocation as an example of successful collaboration between the commission, staff and outside partners.
