Moab City Council voted March 25 to approve a letter of support for congressional legislation introduced as the UMTRA Project Transition Act of 2025 that would transfer a closed Department of Energy UMTRA site north of Moab to Grand County when site closure occurs.
Staff said the city previously passed a resolution expressing interest in joint ownership, but discussions with the senator and county indicated a cleaner congressional approach is to transfer the property to Grand County; the city will continue collaboration with the county on future use. Councilmember Jason moved for approval and the motion passed 5–0.
Staff said the legislation remains under consideration in Congress and that if enacted, the transfer timeline and future ownership arrangements would depend on subsequent county and city negotiations and any conditions Congress or DOE attach to transfer. The approved letter will be sent to the senator, the local U.S. representative and the Grand County Commission.
