City secretary authorized to terminate appointments for long-inactive campaign treasurers

The Wylie City Council on March 25 approved a resolution authorizing the city secretary to terminate campaign treasurer appointments for inactive candidates and political committees that failed to respond to outreach and had not filed required final reports.
City Secretary Miss Storm said the process follows an action the council approved in November and that staff had attempted to contact past candidates and committees (records dating back up to six years) to determine whether they intended to retain their appointments or close their accounts and dispose of surplus funds. Staff reported they had not received responses from a list of individuals and sought authority to terminate those appointments; state law allows a six-year window for disposing of surplus funds and assets.
Miss Storm emphasized the action is administrative paperwork to close out old filings and is not intended to prevent valid candidates from running for office; she said the appointments to be terminated were dated and some extended back to the 1990s. Councilman Gina Malice moved to adopt the resolution; Mayor Pro Tem Forrester seconded. The motion carried 6-0.
The resolution directs the city secretary to notify listed individuals and terminate the appointments 30 days after council approval unless the person contacts the office with the required filings.
