Local pet coalition asks Midlothian council for support for subsidized spay/neuter program

At the March 25 citizens-to-be-heard segment, Kyra Harding and Shannon Smock of the Pet Coalition of Ellis County described the "Snippet in the Bud" program — a partnership with Flying Bee Rescue that provides subsidized spay-and-neuter services to county pets — and asked the council to consider financial support or a reimbursement program.
Harding said that in March the program performed 14 spay/neuter surgeries for Midlothian residents (13 of whom lived inside the city limits) and that Flying Bee Rescue subsidized roughly $100 per surgery; she asked that the city consider supporting the program to reduce the county—s animal overpopulation. Smock, who co-chairs the prevention/medical care team for the coalition, outlined upcoming events including low-cost vaccine clinics, free microchipping events and mobile vaccine clinics being scheduled in Ellis County.
Council did not take immediate action during the meeting; the speakers asked to discuss potential reimbursement mechanisms outside of the council meeting and provided dates and event information for upcoming clinics and fundraisers.
