UN official urges sanction easing and international support for Syria’s economic recovery

A UN official told the Security Council that Syria needs fast and broad easing of targeted sanctions on energy, investment, finance, health and education to enable economic recovery and allow the Syrian people to focus on rebuilding.
The official welcomed humanitarian pledges made at the Ninth Brussels Conference and said more resources will be needed to prevent fragmentation over scarce resources and to give displaced people and host communities the space to rebuild. The official also noted that countries in the region have expressed readiness to provide electricity and other support, but warned that restrictive measures by sanctioning states continue to hamper response.
The official said some sanction‑easing steps have been taken but urged additional targeted and sectoral suspensions to include energy, investment, finance, health and education. He emphasized that the UN will continue to make clear to the caretaker authorities that a “peaceful, credible and inclusive transition creates the most enabling environment for further easing all sanctions.”
The official noted that economic recovery will require significant international support and called on member states to consider restrictions that persist and that hamper humanitarian and recovery efforts.
