Neosho County commissioners approve neighborhood revitalization plans, proclamations, staffing and other routine items

Neosho County commissioners on March 25 approved a slate of motions that included two neighborhood revitalization plan (NRP) applications, county proclamations for April awareness months, hiring in the county 9-1-1 center, a free spring cleanup week at the landfill and a capped remediation authorization for mold at the Judicial Center in Chanute.

The board voted 3-0 to approve a neighborhood revitalization plan for Carver LLC, for a proposed storage unit at 1603 South Plummer in Chanute, and separately approved a plan for Beechner Grama Incorporated to install grain bins on Seventh Street in St. Paul; commissioners said investment estimates for the St. Paul project were “around $200,000.”

The board unanimously approved proclamations designating April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, presented by Hope Unlimited and partners. Hope Unlimited staff described local services including a 24-hour crisis hotline and shelter services for victims.

In personnel business, commissioners voted 3-0 to hire one full-time and one part-time employee in the county 9-1-1 department effective March 31, 2025. The board also approved the county inventory for 2024–25, signed required audit paperwork for the 2024 audit, reappointed two trustees to the regional hospital board and approved an annual software assurance purchase for $576.

The board approved a free spring landfill cleanup week to run April 29–May 3 and authorized an immediate contract to begin mold remediation at the Chanute Judicial Center up to $25,000, with the commission to be notified and reissued approvals if costs approach that cap. Commissioners discussed the uncertainty of remediation scope and asked that contractors pause and update the county if remediation work exceeds preset thresholds.
