Patricia Carter, a Lima resident, asked the city council during the public-comment portion of the meeting to restart efforts to name a stretch of South Main Street for her late father, Pastor C.M. Manley, in recognition of his community work and the youth training center he built.
"As you all know, he was very active in this community ... he took that whole city block down there, which he built a youth training center," Carter said, asking the council to "bring that back or find out how that works to try to get that street named after him."
The presiding officer directed Amy Harpster, the director of public works, to follow up with Carter about the procedure; Harpster was seated behind Carter during the public comment and acknowledged she would follow up.
Why it matters: A renaming would formally recognize a local community leader and could involve public-works procedures for approving street-name changes.
What the council did: The council did not take a formal vote on a renaming at this meeting. The mayor/presiding officer specifically said Harpster would follow up and staff will advise Carter about the process.
Context and next steps: Carter said the earlier nomination occurred about three years ago when her father was ill and that follow-up was interrupted. Council members, including Councilor Jones, expressed support for seeking a resolution with staff to pursue the request.
