Council adopts "Safe Streets and Roads for All" action plan to pursue federal safety grants

The Amarillo City Council gave final approval to the city’s Safe Streets and Roads for All action plan, a document staff said makes Amarillo eligible to apply for federal safety grants and guides a slate of capital projects aimed at reducing crashes and improving walkability.
Emily Kohler, staff presenting the plan, told council this was the first reading and that no changes had been made since the public presentation at the prior meeting. The plan identifies about 16 capital projects citywide with cost estimates and safety measures aimed at pedestrians, cyclists and motorists; adoption is intended to make the city eligible for the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program and other funding sources.
Kohler said the plan will be used in combination with Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) funds and other local sources; council members noted several projects would be good candidates for MPO funding (for example, sidewalks in school zones). Kohler said transportation consultants helped ensure the plan meets the federal program’s basic criteria and that the city had obtained public input and letters of support.
After council discussion about funding mechanisms and project examples, a motion to adopt the plan passed on a 5‑0 voice vote. Staff said the adoption provides the basis to pursue grants, coordinate with MPO funding and include projects in the city’s capital improvement program as appropriate.
