Board issues series of proclamations recognizing Red Cross, developmental disabilities, public health and Cesar Chavez Day; honors retiring fire chief

The Yolo County Board of Supervisors used part of its March 25 session to present a package of ceremonial resolutions and recognitions and to receive public remarks related to the land and labor exhibit and farmworker outreach.
Among the items the board declared March 2025 as American Red Cross Month and recognized the county Red Cross's expansion of volunteers and disaster response work. Frances Huerzo and other Red Cross volunteers accepted the proclamation and described local response activity for recent home fires.
The board also proclaimed March 2025 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, citing an estimated 3,500 county residents living with developmental disabilities and naming local organizations that provide services. Speakers from Willow Grove, Inclusive Arts Alliance and United Cerebral Palsy of Northern California thanked the board and described programs that serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
County leaders further declared April 2025 as National Public Health Week, recognizing public health and environmental health staff for work on disease prevention, food safety, water systems and climate health. Public Health Director Brian Sisson and Environmental Health representatives joined the board for the recognition.
Supervisor Angel Barajas read a proclamation honoring Cesar Chavez Day (March 31) and acknowledged the county's ag labor coordinator, Rodrigo Lopez, who received the resolution and summarized farmworker outreach efforts including the annual farmworker resource fair, bandana and shirt drives, and off‑season assistance programs. Rodrigo Lopez, translating for farmworker speaker Raul Pena, emphasized the hardships farmworkers face in the off season and urged continued engagement and partnership with county and community organizations.
Public comment during the Cesar Chavez item included comments from local residents and advocates who supported a permanent home for the Land and Labor and Latino heritage exhibits and urged continued attention to Wintun indigenous history in county displays.
The board also honored West Plainfield Fire Chief Sherry Bridal (40+ years of service) with a proclamation and retirement badge. Chief Bridal, the first female fire chief in Yolo County, received remarks that traced her leadership and contributions to training, rural addressing and interagency partnerships.
These recognitions do not create legal obligations but reflect county priorities and community partnerships, and they drew several speakers and community groups to the chamber.
