City staff presented a memorandum of agreement from the Georgia Department of Transportation proposing safety improvements at the Main Street railroad crossing. Jody described GDOT's offer to pay full installation costs for three-dimensional lane delineation markers, upgraded lane delineation and solar-powered warning signage to increase visibility for drivers.
Jody said the total GDOT investment would be $16,935 and that Hiram would be responsible for maintenance after installation: "They would pay for the installation. We would basically just be responsible for the upkeep of it thereafter," he said. Council members asked whether the improvements include flashing signs; staff said the proposal includes solar-powered warning signage to draw driver attention.
Staff recommended the council agree to the memorandum of agreement; the item was placed on the consent agenda for further action. No vote was recorded during the work session.
