Council considers expanding massage-spa ordinance exemption to licensed clinical social workers

Hiram City staff asked council members to consider amending the city's spa ordinance to add licensed clinical social workers to a list of professionals exempted from the spa licensing requirement when they employ massage therapists to provide services in a clinical context.
Staff member Jason explained the current ordinance already exempts massage therapists who work for medical doctors, osteopaths, chiropractors, physical or occupational therapists, podiatrists, acupuncturists, registered or licensed practical nurses, and the proposed change would add licensed clinical social workers. Jason said the state massage therapy licensing board was consulted and the director "understood and was in favor" of creating the exemption.
The proposed text amendment was presented as an amendment to section 12-416(e); council members placed the item on the agenda for additional consideration as new business. No final ordinance vote was recorded during the work session.
