Maury County commissioners appoint Daniel Murphy as county attorney after divided debate

The Maury County Commission appointed Daniel Murphy as the county attorney on March 17, 2025, after multiple nomination rounds and a divided floor vote.

The nomination followed public comment and an extended discussion among commissioners over whether the county should hire an individual with long institutional experience or select a commissioner, Jerry Bridenbaugh, who had been nominated from the dais. Commissioner Howard, who led discussion in support of Murphy, said commissioners should decide on the basis of qualifications and experience. "This decision should purely be based upon qualifications as most interviews are," Commissioner Howard said.

Supporters of Murphy emphasized his long service to county government and institutional knowledge. "Experience does matter," Commissioner Pravetti said during debate, arguing that county work benefits from familiarity with local practice. Several commissioners, including Commissioner Stovall, cited Murphy's record during high-profile county matters as reason to retain him.

Opponents raised concerns about perceived conflicts or the optics of selecting a county attorney who works for another local entity. Mayor Budd noted concerns about potential conflicts of interest and said an attorney with ties to a single county entity makes it harder for the county to be viewed as impartial. "From where I sit in meetings... it’s very important to me to have an attorney who does not have a major conflict of interest with one entity in this county," Mayor Budd said.

The commission received public comment in favor of both nominees. Chris Wilson, speaking from the public, urged commissioners to appoint Jerry Bridenbaugh and said the public wanted change.

Commissioners initially narrowed nominations to Daniel Murphy and Jerry Bridenbaugh, and procedures followed the county's statutory rules for conflict and recusal; the county attorney appointment process proceeded with an explicit recusal announced for Commissioner Bridenbaugh on any vote regarding his own nomination. After an initial tie in a first round, commissioners held an additional round limited to a yes-or-no vote on Murphy; that subsequent tally produced an 11–10 result in favor of Murphy, and the commission declared the appointment carried.

The commission did not attach an immediate effective date in the floor discussion beyond the general expectation that the county attorney position would be filled after the appointment process concluded.

The appointment was the most contested personnel item on a long agenda that also included multiple board appointments and budget amendments.
