County approves $93,245 DuraPatcher purchase to replace aging patcher

The Saline County Board of Commissioners on March 25 approved the purchase of a new 2025 DuraPatcher machine for $93,245 under an intergovernmental piggyback of a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) bid.
Road and Bridge Administrator Darren Fischel said the county currently operates a Durapatch-brand machine bought as a used demo in February 2010 that is approaching the end of its useful life. "These machines pay for themselves in efficiency of operations, asphalt costs, and man hours of operation," Fischel said.
Staff recommended piggybacking the county purchase on KDOT's competitive procurement. Fischel told commissioners that a direct quote from the manufacturer would have been $99,945, while the KDOT bid resulted in a $93,245 price—about $6,500 less.
The county's unencumbered balance in the road and bridge special machinery account was presented as $1,095,424.96; purchasing the machine would leave an unencumbered balance of $1,002,000,179.96 (as stated in the staff presentation). A motion to approve RFA 2025-46 passed on a voice vote; individual roll-call votes were not recorded in the transcript.
Fischel said the old machine will be sold at auction at a later date and that this purchase should conclude planned fleet machinery purchases for the year.
No further conditions or amendments were recorded when commissioners approved the purchase.
