Planning staff outlines community engagement, joint meetings and staffing updates

Lake County planning staff updated the planning commission on outreach for the countywide comprehensive plan, upcoming joint meetings with city bodies and near-term staffing changes.
Staff described a community storytelling contest accepting written, photographic and audio submissions through April 18, with a public event scheduled for April 25 at Freight. Melissa (staff) said community engagement work is at roughly 75% of the team’s internal goal and that small-group conversations and pop-up outreach (including at Colorado Mountain College and other community venues) are ongoing.
Staff said the county intends to schedule joint meetings between the county planning commission and the city planning commission and to hold reciprocal visits between the county board and city council to begin a coordinated comprehensive-plan process. Staff noted the city planning commission generally meets at 6:00 p.m. and that timing will be considered when scheduling joint sessions.
On staffing, Melissa announced the hire of a GIS technician, Shelby Seitzinger (recent Colorado Mountain College graduate), who will support mapping and the backcountry project work. Staff also said the county will soon post an environmental-health specialist position to oversee on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) and encouraged the public to share recruitment information for candidates with related certifications. In the interim, building and code-enforcement staff and a third-party reviewer (SEH engineering) are providing capacity for OWTS reviews.
Staff also noted short-term rental licensing and compliance work is ongoing and that a joint work session with city council on lifetime/land-use topics is scheduled for the next day at CMC.
