Clearfield County Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and invited representatives from Children's Aid Society to urge community awareness.
Commissioners read the proclamation, called on citizens, agencies and businesses to support families, and approved a motion to adopt the proclamation by voice vote.
Ashley Cali, Family Support Services Manager with Children's Aid Society, spoke to the board about local need and outreach plans. She told the commissioners that “from July 1 of 2023 to June 30 of 2024, we had 188 children in placement.” She added that, in her estimate, “maybe 20 of those were not a result of child abuse and neglect,” and said the remaining placements reflected cases of abuse or neglect. Cali urged public promotion of prevention activities, including a countywide "Wear Blue Day" scheduled for April 4.
Katarina Patrick, listed in the meeting as a parent educator with Children's Aid Society, said the society served just under 200 children in 2024 through the local CAC and emphasized outreach and education efforts.
The commissioners posed for a photograph with the visiting representatives following the proclamation.
The proclamation directs local agencies and community groups to increase participation in family-support and prevention activities during April.
