The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners on March 11, 2025, appointed Daryl Steele to a vacancy on the Maybelle Volunteer Fire Department advisory board.
Before the appointment, resident Mark Graham spoke during public comment urging the commissioners to consider expanding the advisory board to seven members to increase diversity and bring fresh ideas; he noted there were three applicants for the opening. “I understand that … you guys this morning are going to look to put another person on the board … and for the purposes of, votes and having a, I guess a diverse board would like to request if the county would consider putting 7 persons on that advisory board,” Graham said.
Commissioners discussed the department’s transition: Maybelle is creating a 501(c)(3) fire entity that will form its own board once the nonprofit is established. Commissioners noted that changing the county’s advisory board to seven members would require a bylaw change and could not be completed in a single meeting. The board moved to fill the existing vacancy so the transition process could proceed.
Commissioner 2 moved to appoint Daryl Steele to the Maybelle Volunteer Fire Department advisory board; the motion was seconded and carried with all commissioners voting yes.
