Board praises Zephyr learning showcase, honors longtime middle-school educator and highlights student achievements

The Mahtomedi Public School District board opened Monday’s meeting with recognitions including the district’s Zephyr Learning Showcase and a tribute to a longtime middle-school educator.
Board members described the Zepper (Zephyr) Learning Showcase as a demonstration of “engaged learning,” highlighting student work in cooking, AVID career-planning exercises, early-childhood literacy training, science experiments, coding and a math-tutoring program that produced flexible, peer-facing tools. Trustees said brief conversations with students who presented reinforced the district’s literacy and career-readiness priorities.
The board also recognized “Mr. Begin” (identified in the meeting as Paul), a middle-school educator honored for 55 years at the district. Trustees and colleagues praised his student-centered approach and long-term contributions to activities including ski club, tutoring and informal student supports. Speakers said Mr. Begin’s long service connected generations of students and noted the personal and programmatic impacts of his work.
Student representative Max provided a report on upcoming events and recent accomplishments across grade levels: prom planning for high school juniors, spring elementary concerts, Wildwood’s Spring Fling on May 16, and recent competitive successes. Board members noted students advancing to regional and national competitions in spelling, DECA, the NASA HUNCH program and athletics; administrators also highlighted state championships in wrestling and esports accomplishments.
Trustees encouraged attendance at upcoming district events, including the Zephyr gala on April 11 and a high-school career-internship and volunteer fair on the same day. They also reminded the public about community-education offerings and the annual district report mailed to residents.
Ending Board members closed the recognitions portion by taking a group photo with the honoree and encouraging community attendance at spring events.
