The Crockett City Council approved a budget calendar to guide preparation of the fiscal 2026 budget and set a council budget workshop for the morning of July 7.
City staff told council the calendar is intended to align department submissions, public hearings and the tax-rate vote. Staff noted that some inputs — notably certified property values from the appraisal district and final sales-tax estimates — are not available until July; the calendar uses anticipated values for planning purposes.
Council members were asked to put the calendar dates on their schedules so department heads and council can participate. Staff said there are four council meetings tied to the budget process, and two of those dates (August 4 and August 18) are required for the formal hearings and the vote on the tax rate and the budget. Staff encouraged council to use the budget workshop to surface questions early to avoid surprises at final adoption.
During discussion members asked about street lighting and leaning utility poles. Staff said street lights are covered under a contract with Encore and that routine outages and replacements are handled through that contract; larger changes could be budgeted. Council members also raised that many leaning poles in town are Windstream poles that the city has reported; staff said the issue is an industry/ownership enforcement matter rather than a line-item budget expense.
A motion to approve the fiscal year 2026 budget calendar was made, seconded and carried.
Council members were asked to confirm availability for the July 7 workshop and to notify staff if calendar conflicts arise.
