Tourism committee backs widening of 'state park' seat to 'point of interest' and will recommend code change to full board

The McMinnville Tourism and Marketing Committee voted to recommend that the city amend municipal code section 7-302 to replace a specified “state park” representative seat with a representative for a natural landmark or point of interest and to consider adding seats for the Industrial Development Board director, a Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) representative and an arts representative.
Committee members said replacing the narrow "state park" designation with a broader "point of interest/natural landmark" seat would allow the city to recruit representatives from local attractions such as Cumberland Caverns, area waterways and other natural assets while still allowing a state park representative to be nominated in the future if appropriate.
The committee's motion was to forward the recommended change to the full board of mayor and aldermen for formal amendment of the municipal code. Members also discussed expanding committee membership—naming the IDB director, a TWRA representative because of their role with waterways, and possibly an arts representative to help connect the city to mural and grant opportunities.
Committee members agreed to bring the draft language to the full board for consideration at the next meeting. They also set a committee meeting for Monday, March 17 at 5 p.m. to begin outreach and candidate identification for the proposed seats.
Separately, the committee discussed a public confusion about a reported nomination of Jimmy Haley. After reaching out, committee staff said Haley was unaware of earlier media coverage but has since agreed to sit on the committee.
The committee did not adopt final code language; its vote created a recommendation for the full board to amend 7-302. No final municipal-code change was made at the committee level.
