Council approves Fogland Beach sunset series; residents ask for dune protections and limits

The Tiverton Town Council on March 24 approved a Recreation Department proposal to hold a small-scale Fogland Beach "Sunset Series" on eight dates from late June through August. The events will feature one steel-drum performer, limited amplification and a small footprint of food vendors.
Residents and conservation-minded commenters urged guardrails to protect the beach's dunes and to require a thorough cleanup after each event. Maureen Morrow, speaking in support of the series, asked that the Recreation Commission set rules to keep people off the dunes and consider starting with fewer dates to gauge impacts.
Councilor and Recreation Commission members said the program is modeled on a similar, previously approved summer series and will be smaller in scale than other concert programs. Commissioners and staff told the council that they planned additional measures including extra porta-potties and police patrols, designated parking limits, gate attendants and a cleanup plan that would ensure the site is left free of litter.
Councilor and staff answered neighborhood questions about police presence and emergency access: police patrols will be requested for each sunset-night event, and event staff will coordinate with the department to keep the beach access road clear for emergency vehicles. Recreation staff also said they would explore alternatives to portable toilets in future budget cycles but that additional portable units would be placed along the far end of the beach for the series.
