Prairie Park parents press district for external audit and wider community debrief after alleged student assaults

"This happened on this team's watch. When a complex system designed for safety has a catastrophic failure, it is not just because of one bad actor or one person's mistake, it is because of multiple systemic problems," Dr. Sydney Courtney, a Prairie Park parent and veterinarian, told the board during public comment.
Courtney said members of affected families have thanked community advocates and said the district’s initial steps — including increased lines of sight in areas where children are served and school‑level communications — are a start but do not substitute for an independent review. She asked the board to engage outside experts, citing the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) as an organization with services and guidance the district should consider.
Courtney asked whether the district has launched a promised website with resources and whether a crisis debrief for parents and families has been scheduled; she said not all families have equal capacity to ask for help and that promised resources must be proactively offered.
Superintendent Janice Swift and other district leaders acknowledged conversations with families and said some resources had been made available to parents who requested them; Courtney and other advocates asked for broader, proactive communication and for a public schedule of debriefs and supports. The board did not vote on any specific follow‑up at the meeting, but Courtney said advocates will continue to request external review and clearer public communication.
Courtney said that debriefs should be run by outside experts to ensure that "figurative blind spots do not remain," and requested that the district share details of any external reviews that are commissioned.
