Hermiston High athletes, coaches honored at school board for state finishes in swimming, bowling and wrestling

The recognitions highlighted individual and team achievements that district athletic director Larry Usher said reflect “all the incredible accomplishments and all the hard work they put in.” Usher introduced the honorees and noted logistical commitments for some programs, including boys swim athletes who travel to Boardman for indoor pool time.
The board presented a Mid Columbia Conference coach-of-the-year recognition to Tammy Fisher, Hermiston High boys swim coach. Usher said Fisher was named conference coach of the year and noted the swim program’s development under her leadership.
The board also recognized Lily Fields for finishing second at the WIAA state bowling championships in Tacoma. Usher said Hermiston had not previously sent an official state bowling team and described Fields’s result as “an incredible accomplishment.”
Hermiston’s girls wrestling program was celebrated after sending 14 participants to the WIAA state championships. Head girls wrestling coach Al Davis and assistant Rochelle Myers introduced the state qualifiers and placers. According to Davis and Myers, the girls won the Mid Columbia Conference championship, placed third as a team at state and achieved multiple individual placings; Davis said many of the wrestlers had not begun the sport until high school and credited their rapid progress to work ethic and team cohesion. The transcript-listed state placers included Tutisipeni (third), Ayani (third), Kiana (fourth), Emma (fourth), Jaden McKim (seventh) and Georgia (eighth). The roster of state participants mentioned in the meeting included Jadani Orozco Avila, Lily Foreman, Evelyn Pacheco Avelado, Maya McIntosh, Taylor Hancock, Nicole Valley, Sofia Mendoza, Harmony Blake and others.
On the boys side, Hermiston’s wrestling team won the Mid Columbia Conference championship and finished second at the state tournament. Several individual boys qualifiers were introduced, with placements and weight classes listed by coach Kyle during the meeting. Among the boys the board recognized were a state champion at 138 pounds, Jason Rodriguez, and other placers including Dom Echeverria (285 pounds, third) and Braden Medell (120 pounds, third), according to the list read aloud at the meeting.
No formal board action was taken on the recognitions; they were presented as ceremonial acknowledgments. The board adopted the meeting agenda at the start of the session by motion, which the board chair said “carries unanimously.” The motion to adopt the agenda was made and seconded earlier in the meeting.
The board’s acknowledgments included both coach and student speakers; several coaches emphasized sustained practice and off-season commitments, including year‑round mat work for wrestlers and bus trips for swimmers to access an indoor pool in Boardman.
The board’s recognition segment concluded before the meeting moved on to school presentations and study items.
