Superintendent cites family engagement, collective teacher efficacy; district eligible for expanded ELA ‘science of reading’ grant

Superintendent Dr. Steinhaus told the Huron School District 02-2 Board of Education that the district’s spring and summer action research will focus on improving family engagement and strengthening collective teacher efficacy to raise student achievement.
He said the instructional leadership team identified those two strategies after reviewing peer-reviewed research. “Collective teacher efficacy according to Peter DeWitt is the perception that teachers in a given school make an educational difference to their students over and above the educational impact of their homes and communities,” Dr. Steinhaus said.
Dr. Steinhaus also updated the board on a state grant known as the ELA South Dakota grant, part of the Department of Education’s science-of-reading initiative. He said the state received a $54,000,000 grant and that, because Huron provides pre-K instruction, the district is eligible for up to $775,000 over four years (a total of $3,100,000 across that four-year eligibility period). He said the board will see an updated intent-to-apply item on the April 14 agenda.
The superintendent said the literacy plan emphasizes collective teacher efficacy among its main components, aligning with the district’s action-research focus. Board members offered no further questions and accepted the report for future planning.
