Board leans to table decision on Berrien Math & Science Center; seeks further feedback and a phased transition plan

The Edwardsburg board discussed the future of the district's relationship with the Berrien Math and Science Center (BMSC) and signaled a preference to delay a final decision while the district gathers additional information and develops a transition plan.

Board members and staff reviewed input gathered from current and former students and parents. Staff noted some strengths of the BMSC program (AP course access and strong instruction) but also said the district has expanded in-house AP offerings and that Edwardsburg students have performed strongly in AP classes offered by the high school.

Several board members expressed concern that the program could limit students' access to other high-school experiences and to the district's school culture because students leave campus for part of the day. Others emphasized the value of opportunities the center provides and urged caution before ending any relationship.

The board's working preference, as stated in the meeting, was to table the final decision for about one year, allow current eighth-graders to apply for the BMSC in the near term, and in the meantime collect more targeted feedback from students who left the program after initial years there. Board members suggested sending the program findings to the curriculum/strategic plan subcommittee for further study and to identify ways to add more 'hands-on' experiences in district classes.

Staff and board members also discussed staffing, the requirements to teach AP courses and whether the district currently has or could hire teachers to provide comparable in-house AP offerings. No formal final vote to end or continue the district's relationship with BMSC was taken; rather, the board agreed to further study, allow current cohorts to apply, and revisit the decision next year.
