District reports winter I-Ready assessment gains in reading and math, staff plans further analysis

District staff presented the board with the district's winter I-Ready assessment results, showing notable increases in the percentage of students scoring in the Tier 1 (proficient) band across multiple grade spans for both reading and math.
For reading, staff cited the primary (K'1) group moving from 19% proficient in fall to 51% in winter; Tier 2 decreased from 77% to 47% and Tier 3 (red) declined from 4% to 1%. At Eagle Lake (grades 2'3 in the packet), Tier 1 rose from 37% to 51%, and similar progress was reported across the intermediate and middle school bands. For middle school reading, tier-1 proficiency increased from 48% to 56% while Tier 3 decreased from 30% to 27%.
For math, staff reported primary Tier 1 moving from 13% proficient in fall to 38% in winter, with Tier 3 falling from 5% to 1%. Eagle Lake math Tier 1 rose from 23% to 44% and Tier 3 dropped from 26% to 11%. Intermediate and middle-school math showed comparable gains in Tier 1 and declines in Tier 3.
Staff emphasized these are interim checkpoint results (winter window) and that assessments are used with MTSS teams to target instruction. Board members asked for additional comparisons to state averages and asked about extending similar benchmark systems to the high school. Staff reported that the provider is piloting a high-school version of I-Ready and that district staff who attended a recent conference learned a high-school component is rolling out; the district did not pilot this year but will consider implementation next year. The superintendent noted upcoming SAT/PSAT/state testing that will be presented to the board after spring testing, with some data embargoed until fall.
Board members and staff agreed winter scores can cause anxiety because growth is often more visible at the end of the year; staff noted expected stretch growth over the year and cited Eagle Lake being recognized as a 'super stretch school' for high summer growth. Board members requested future breakdowns by subgroup (gender, socioeconomic status) and a comparison to state averages when available.
