Edwardsburg board approves bids for Eagle Lake, primary and intermediate renovations

The Edwardsburg Public Schools Board of Education voted to approve construction bids for renovations at Eagle Lake Elementary and separate bids for the district's primary and intermediate buildings, board members said during their meeting.
The board was presented with details of the Eagle Lake scope, which includes full replacement of flooring, asbestos abatement, installation of a secure vestibule and renovations to student bathrooms. The primary and intermediate projects also will add secure vestibules and include limited asbestos abatement; the pickup/drop-off loop for those buildings was not part of the approvals and will return to the board later, the superintendent said.
Max, a representative from Skillman, told the board the recommended contractors have prior experience in the district and that the construction team felt confident in the bids received. School staff members Veil Enders and Chris Neff were thanked by the superintendent for extensive pre-bid work and review of the contractor submittals.
Board members moved and seconded the motions to approve the recommended bids. The board approved the Eagle Lake bid by roll-call vote (Tammy: yes; Natalie: yes; Kevin: yes; Chelsea: yes; Nick: yes; Board member (chair): yes). The board then approved the separate motion to accept the recommended bids for the primary and intermediate renovations (Nick: yes; Chelsea: yes; Kevin: yes; Board member (chair): yes; Tammy: yes; Natalie: yes).
Board discussion noted the timeline for work to take place over the summer so that Eagle Lake will be substantially renovated by next fall. The superintendent and Skillman said middle school and high school bids for later phases would be released soon and returned to the board for approval in April.
The board did not change the approved scope to add playground traffic/pick-up loop work; that element was explicitly excluded from the current motions and will be presented separately.
The board's approvals follow the bond referendum passed last May and are intended to begin implementing facility improvements outlined in that bond package.
About the approvals: the motions authorized staff to award contracts to the recommended bidders and start contract administration consistent with the district's procurement process. No legal or statutory citation was given during the presentation.
Looking ahead, the board will consider additional bids for middle and high school renovations at upcoming meetings and will return with procurement details for the pickup/drop-off loop and any related construction items not included in tonight's votes.
