Board considers tightening vetting for volunteer coaches after out-of-district lawsuit; asks attorney for options
Summary
Following discussion of a lawsuit in a neighboring system, board members asked administration and the attorney to return with options to require stronger background checks or employee onboarding for volunteer coaches, and to consider fingerprint-based screening and annual renewals.

Board members expressed concern about current practices for approving volunteer and paid coaches and asked administration to return with draft procedures and legal guidance about vetting.
Multiple members cited an out-of-district case in which two coaches faced a lawsuit after conduct described as hazing; speakers said the district should avoid similar liability and ensure appropriate screening. Currently the district treats many coaches and volunteers under a volunteer track with level-2 background checks; some paid coaches receive stipends and personnel files were maintained historically for paid positions.
Board members suggested two paths: continue treating some coaches as volunteers but require more robust background checks (including fingerprinting and full checks) or require coach-appointees to enter the employee onboarding track. Several members recommended fingerprint-based screening, the same process used by county Parks and Recreation and some neighboring systems. Members also asked that annual renewals of coach approvals be presented to the board similarly to teacher contracts to improve oversight.
The board directed district legal counsel (Mr. Basher referenced in the pre-meeting) and administration to draft options and associated policies or procedural changes so the board can consider a clear approach to coach vetting for the 2025—6 school year. No immediate policy change or vote occurred at the meeting.
