Board approves amendment to metal-detector policy language, asks clear-bag rule to be added as amendment

Caswell County Schools board members on April 7 moved to treat portions of policy 4342 (metal detectors) as an amendment during the second read and carried the motion.

The board discussed text under the policy labeled "special considerations," specifically references to the clear-bag rule and guidelines for carrying clear bags into schools. Several board members said the district administration should post the clear-bag guidance publicly and asked that the language be integrated into the policy-management system as an amendment so it appears in policy documents the public can access.

At the meeting a board member moved "to remove for a second read as an amendment to the current policy." Another board member seconded the motion and the chair called for a voice/raise-hand vote. The motion carried.

Board members discussed practical implementation, including making parents aware of the clear-bag requirement on the district website and ensuring principals post signage at entry points. One board member noted that in another district the clear-bag protocol was treated as a regulation attached to a search-box policy and recommended Caswell County consider a similar approach; others said they wanted the item in the policy-management system as an amendment. The board provided direction to administration to prepare the amended language for the next reading.

The change was procedural: the board moved the policy language forward as an amendment for the second reading; no immediate changes to school operations were announced beyond the request to publicize the clear-bag guidance.
