Commission approves American Beach grant cleanup and $103,693 contract increase for roadway base

Nassau County moved forward on final work related to the American Beach water and sewer project during its March 20 meeting, approving administrative grant adjustments and a contract change order the county said is needed for paving subbase improvements.
County staff explained the department sought authorization to have the chairman sign a modification with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to extend the grant expiration date and to revise certain grant requirements, audit provisions and progress-reporting forms for the American Beach well and septic tank phase-out project. Staff described this as a cleanup action intended to ensure the county can utilize remaining grant funds as the project concludes.
Separately, the board approved a change order to contract CM3171-CO11 with US Water Services Corporation for $103,693 to cover "additional costs related to the increase in the depth of crush (aggregate) in the amount of $103,693." County staff said the change increases crushed depth from 1 inch to 3 inch to create a proper subbase in areas that will be paved after sewer work is complete: "it's a change order from the 1 inch to the 3 inch to make sure that we have a proper sub base," staff said.
The change order passed on a motion by Commissioner Farmer with a second from Commissioner Martin and a 5-0 vote. The DEP grant modification was handled within the consent agenda and recorded as approved with the other consent items (vote 5-0). Staff said these items will help close out the American Beach project soon and that paving of additional roadways will follow the utility work.
