Purvis Gray & Company LLP presented the Nassau County fiscal year 2024 audit to the Board of County Commissioners on March 20 and issued an unmodified opinion on the county's financial statements.
"We've issued what's called an unmodified opinion," Ron Whitesides, a partner with Purvis Gray & Company, told the board, describing that as the highest level of assurance auditors can provide that financial statements are fairly presented. Whitesides said the firm's work included roughly 2,000 staff hours and visits to constitutional officers and county departments.
The audit included a single-audit compliance review of larger federal and state grants. "We only have 1 control issue recommendation to report to you," Whitesides said, describing a timing issue on one grant where costs were incurred after the county's fiscal year end. He said the issue involved about $45,000 in costs and that the county had worked with the grantor and those costs were allowed, so there was no financial damage to the county.
Whitesides praised county management and constitutional officers for timely preparation and internal controls, saying the county has shown improvement over multiple years. No board action was required; the commission received the audit presentation and the unmodified opinion.
