Multiple Assembly members offered tributes on the floor, describing Deputy Cuevas as a six‑year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and a resident of Fontana. Assemblymember Garcia said Deputy Cuevas was pursuing an auto theft suspect when his patrol vehicle crashed and struck an electrical pole; despite a rapid emergency response, he “succumb[ed] to his injuries at the scene.” Garcia said Deputy Cuevas was 36 years old.
Colleagues noted his community involvement, including mentorship in youth football programs. “His mentorship had a lasting impact on young athletes, teaching them the important values of teamwork, perseverance, and discipline,” Assemblymember Garcia said. Other speakers, including Assemblymembers Carrillo, Rodriguez, Ramos and Lackey, echoed condolences and praised his service.
Members asked that the adjournment in memory be printed in the Assembly journal; the requests were deemed read and the Assembly agreed to adjourn in his memory.
Deputy Cuevas is survived by his wife, two children, his parents and siblings; members offered the family condolences and recognized his public‑safety service.
