Tanglewood Elementary reports gains in reading and math, pilot mentorship and attendance interventions

Amy Steadman, principal at Tanglewood Elementary, presented data to the Board of Education on student achievement, special‑education outcomes and chronic absenteeism at the March 24 meeting.
Steadman reported reading Tier‑1 rates rose from 31% at the start of the year to 53% at the mid‑year benchmark (a 22‑percentage‑point increase). Math Tier‑1 rose from 19% to 44% (a 25‑point increase). For the special‑education subset, Tier‑3 reading decreased from 80% to 64% (16‑point decrease) and Tier‑3 math fell from 64% to 28% (36‑point decrease). Steadman credited interventions including high‑dose tutoring, Panther partner practice, targeted paraprofessional support and AmeriCorps members working with higher‑need students.
On chronic absenteeism Steadman said the third‑quarter rate was 12% and the school’s annual goal was 10%, and described family‑targeted interventions (for example providing a personal box of school supplies to a child whose family cited illness and shared supplies as a barrier). Steadman outlined a new PrimeFit mentorship pilot and other SEL supports designed to improve engagement.
Steadman also recognized staff and students for service and extracurricular achievements and invited board questions; trustees praised the STEAM schedule and student displays.
