Guthrie library to expand summer meal boxes but paperwork, delivery limits create distribution challenges

The Guthrie Public Library Advisory Board discussed plans to expand the library’s summer feeding program from a short pilot to a full summer distribution, with staff describing operational changes driven by the food bank’s new rules.
Gracia said the library will distribute non-congregate meal boxes (five breakfasts and five lunches per box) for each child 18 or under, once per week. She said state or sponsor changes mean libraries are now limited to one delivery per week and that the food bank limited the local pickup window to three hours on the chosen distribution day. “They limited the pickup time to 3 hours once a week,” she said, and noted that schedule creates access challenges for working families.
To respond, staff told the board they plan to distribute boxes on Thursday evenings, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., to reach families who cannot pick up during daytime hours. The library will keep a roster and log of recipients for the food bank’s bookkeeping and will stack boxes in an office area at least six inches off the floor to meet storage requirements. Gracia also said if boxes remain at the end of a distribution period, the food bank will retrieve excess stock and that staff previously distributed roughly 75 boxes during a shorter pilot period.
Board members and staff discussed volunteer needs for unloading pallets and handing out boxes and noted prior delivery inconsistencies that sometimes forced staff to turn families away. The library will use volunteers where available and intends to coordinate deliveries with the food bank to reduce missed deliveries.
The program is first-come, first-served; parents sign a roster with the names of children receiving boxes and do not have to present children at pickup, per Gracia. The board did not take a formal vote; staff will proceed under the new distribution rules and return with operational updates.
