Planning Commission approves Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital fourth-floor addition

The Murfreesboro Planning Commission on March 19 approved initial and final design review and site plan review for a 12,634-square-foot fourth-floor addition to the Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital complex at 1700 Medical Center Parkway.
Planning staff described the addition as matching the existing facility’s materials and colors, located at the eastern end of the building above the emergency center and ambulance drop-off. Staff said the project proposes rooftop equipment screening so it is not visible from the public right of way and that no site work is required because the building is being added atop an existing structure.
“...this item on your GDO portion of your agenda today is a request from Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, for a 12,634 square foot addition onto their existing facility,” planning presenter Mr. Barbee said, explaining the rooftop screening and matching materials. Staff recommended allowing initial and final review at the same meeting because the addition is consistent with the existing structure.
A motion to approve initial and final site review passed unanimously. Commissioners recorded “aye” votes from Ms. Sabalwater, Mr. Carroll, Vice Chair Halliburton, Mr. Harris, Mr. Prince, Mr. Wright and Chair Jones.
The approval was granted “subject to all staff comments,” as recorded in the motion. No changes to parking or site circulation were required, and staff said the hospital has abundant on-site parking available for visitors.
The project developer on the agenda is Medexcel Corporation; staff passed a materials board to commissioners during the presentation.
Next steps: with the Planning Commission approval, staff will track compliance with the listed staff conditions and any building-permit submittals required by the building-inspection and fire departments.
