Committee reviews lease amendment to relocate Verizon equipment; councilor raises concerns about terms

City staff told the Bangor City Finance Committee on March 24 that the city must amend a lease with Bell Atlantic (doing business as Verizon Wireless) to reflect a new location for Verizon equipment displaced by the connector project.
"This lease agreement is updating lease to reflect a new location of the equipment. So it does not changing any of the terms of the agreement," David Little, the finance director, said. Little said the amendment only modifies the equipment location and does not alter other lease terms.
Councilor Beck said she was concerned about the contract terms and the remaining lease length. "I see that the lease is set to expire in 6 years," Beck said. She said prior lease stipulations from Verizon have limited vendor options and that the council should be mindful when negotiating the next lease so the city is not similarly constrained.
A councilor moved to forward the amendment to the full City Council; the transcript records a motion and subsequent confirmation that the item would appear on that evening's full council agenda. Staff confirmed the amendment had not previously been through committee. The committee did not record a final council vote in the transcript; full Council action was listed as the next step.
