Commissioners discuss old courthouse survey, pestis/asbestos inspections and next steps

Griggs County commissioners on March 24 discussed the next steps for the county’s old courthouse, including required surveys and possible asbestos inspection costs.
Staff said that a structural and historical survey (registry work) and a pestis/asbestos survey must be completed before major work proceeds. An initial inspection estimate for asbestos testing was given in the range of $3,000 to $5,000; staff said the exact cost depends on the firm and the scope of sampling required. Commissioners noted that older floor tiles, insulation or piping coverings in a building of the courthouse’s age may contain asbestos and that exact removal costs will depend on what the survey finds.
Staff said they would get multiple bids for the required surveys and report back with estimates. The county will use the survey results to determine required remediation and to inform any future applications for preservation grants or renovation work.
No contract awards or removal work were authorized at the March 24 meeting; the discussion was limited to planning and cost estimates.
