Summary
The city approved a one-year, $182,450 contract to Bahali Construction LLC for sidewalk repair and replacement, with a 20% construction allowance; staff said the allocation will address approximately half of the city's current backlog of hazardous sidewalk locations.
The Miramar City Commission approved an award of Invitation for Bids No. 25-006 to Bahali Construction LLC for sidewalk repair and replacement services, authorizing a $182,450 contract and a 20% construction allowance ($36,490) for a total project allocation of $218,940.
Parks and public works staff described the program as part of the city's street maintenance operations to proactively repair damaged sidewalks in the public right-of-way, prioritizing trip hazards and routes near schools, parks and senior centers. "This allocation will not necessarily cover all the needs of the city, but this goes a far way in taking care of some of the situations that we have right now," an assistant director said during the presentation.
Nut graf: City staff told the commission that the funding will address roughly half of identified sidewalk needs and does not cover construction of new sidewalks; the contract includes provisions for installing root barriers where tree roots cause damage, a topic commissioners requested be included in contractor work.
Commissioners asked whether the funding would cover all needed repairs and whether root-barrier installation was included; staff said the contract contains a provision for root barriers and that remaining unmet needs would be addressed in future budget cycles. The motion to award the contract passed unanimously.
Ending: Staff said the one-year contract may roll over if funds remain unspent and that the public works department will continue to evaluate and prioritize hazardous locations for replacement.
