Assessor reports progress on parcel reviews; tax notices expected on schedule

Carbon County Assessor Kevin Yule reported that land reviews and building permit reconciliations are nearly complete, initial values will be submitted to the state by March 31, and tax notices remain on track for July.
Kevin Yule, deputy assessor, gave the Carbon County Commission an update on appraisal and parcel work. Yule said the office has reviewed more than 13,000 parcels and that “there's just under 2,000 parcels left” of the land review. He said approximately 900 commercial parcels remain for review and that the office is finalizing building permits for 2024.
Yule described field reviews to identify buildings that were added without permits and said staff are training on measuring, condition, quality and ‘‘effective age’’ to inform the modified cost approach used for valuations. “We’re supposed to give our initial assessment to the state by the March 31,” he said, noting that residential values should be finalized about two weeks after that and that tax notices are scheduled for July. He cautioned that, if residents view preliminary online values before tax rates are certified, the tax amount shown will be based on last year’s rates and therefore not final.
Commissioners thanked Yule for the work and asked about timing; Yule said commercial reviews and some remote canyon parcels may require travel after snow melts in April or early May.
